Oats And Rice Rava Undis

Undis or steamed rice balls are a Konkani GSB delicacy and is commonly made for breakfast. It is normally made with rice or rice rava and coconut. It is a steamed dish hence very healthy and less in calories. To cut the calorie content further we came up with this healthier version. This one is with oats, rice rava and zero coconut. Very easy and quick to make. My dear friend Prajna Pai Prabhu, a very talented cook who has the ability of giving creative and innovative twists to any recipe, is the one who came up with this idea. This quality of hers amazes me all the time. This one for your creativity Prajna :)

Servings : 25 small undis
Oats - 1/2 cup
Rice Rava - 1 cup
Water - 2 1/2 cups
Salt - As per taste

Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
Jeera - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Methi seeds - 1/4 tsp
Red Chillies - 3 broken into very small pieces
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig chopped
  • Wash rice rava well and keep aside.
  • Take a deep thick bottomed pan. Add oil.
  • Add mustard seeds and jeera.
  • Once they crackle add curry leaves, urad dal, methi seeds and fry well.
  • Finally add the broken chillies and give a stir.
  • Add water and salt to taste.
  • When the water boils add the oats and stir well. Lower the flame.
  • Add the rice rava little by little and keep stirring so that no lumps are formed.
  • Keep stirring till the mixture starts leaving the sides.
  • Once it becomes semi- solid switch off flame and allow to cool.
  • Once it cools down. grease your palm with oil and start making undis.
  • For making undis bind the mixture into a ball and give a slight depression in the centre as shown in the picture above.
  • Steam these undis for 10 minutes just before serving.
  • You can even spriinkle some water on them and microwave for 8-10 minutes.
  • Serve undis hot with the chutney of your choice or sambhar.
  • If you are making undis way ahead of the serving time, see that you keep them in a moist cloth and steam them just before serving. This will prevent them from becoming dry.

Happy Cooking!!
